Encouraged in his education by English missionaries and teachers, he graduated in law from Makerere University, Kampala and is an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda. He practised Law both at the Bar and at the Bench before he came to the UK in 1974.

He was elected as Archbishop of York on 21st July 2005 and confirmed as the 97th Archbishop of York on 5th October 2005 in St Mary-le-Bow, London and Inagurated on 30th November 2005 in York Minster.

Dr Sentamu is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His interests include music, cooking, reading, athletics, rugby and football. He is married to Margaret, and they have two grown-up children, Grace and Geoffrey and two grown-up foster children.

The Archbishop first became aware of Peace Mala when he was presented one as a gift by Miss Tara Failey of Woodheys Primary School during his visit to Manchester Cathedral on Environment Day, Thursday 8th October 2009. He later wrote to Miss Failey thanking her for the gift and commented that the Peace Mala is a wonderful symbol of goodwill, with its central message of treating others as you would wish them to treat you. He hoped that the pupils of the school would continue to spread peace and goodwill through sharing the Peace Mala bracelets with others.

When Pam Evans became aware of this she wrote to Archbishop Sentamu and thanked him for his positive words. She also asked him if he would formally endorse the Peace Mala.

Archbishop of York

This is Archbishop Sentamu's official endorsement of Peace Mala:

I am glad to be able to support the purpose of the Peace Mala bracelet insofar as it reflects an important aspect of the Christian Gospel. There is much more to the good news of forgiveness and peace in Christ, and it was he who gave us a new commandment:
'As I have loved you, so you must love one another' - John 13.34
