Taha Idris OBE

Peace Mala Endorsement

Former Director of Swansea Bay Racial Equality Council

Taha Idris

I wish to express my support for the Peace Mala initiative which has now become a significant movement in its own right, across not just Wales but in various parts of the world.

I am proud to have been associated with the Peace Mala movement from the days of its inception. I can vividly remember the initiator of this movement, Pam Evans, seeing me immediately after the events of 11th September 2001. Her vision for a securer and better world where communities, particularly the religious communities, have respect and a common bond with each other has been so aptly embodied in the message that Peace Mala has continued to give out since that time.

Swansea Bay Racial Equality Council

As Director of Swansea Bay Racial Equality Council, I see Peace Mala as an important part of the jigsaw of community life which brings us back to the message of peace and harmony to overcome the differences that we, as humans, so often pursue so vigorously in our daily lives.

I would like to take this opportunity to give my endorsement to the Peace Mala movement and congratulate everyone involved in it. May your work continue to benefit us all in recognising that although the rainbow has distinct colours yet it only looks good because of the many different colour that combine to give us the colourful impact that we love so much.

Taha Idris was appointed to the Swansea Bay Racial Equality Council in November 2000 as the Director. He has been in the racial equality council movement since the incorporation of West Glamorgan Community Relations Council (the predecessor to the Swansea Bay Racial Equality Council) in 1982/83.

Since the introduction of RRAA 2000, Mr Idris led a number of workshops and presentations throughout Wales on RRAA including training of ESTYN Inspectors, the Beyond Rhetoric Conference for the voluntary sector, the Probations Service, local college and Welsh University Vice-Chancellors.

Mr Idris has worked in local government since 1983. His last post was as Head of Financial Accounts for Lancashire Constabulary 1993-2000. He was an active member of the NW region management Committee of BBC Children in Need (1993-2000).

Mr Idris is a member of the Lord Chancellor's advisory Committee for West Glamorgan and was appointed by the Home Secretary as assessor to the County and High Court Judges in 1991. From 2003 until 2008 he was a Board Member of the Community Fund and the Big Lottery Fund.

Mr Idris was made a freeman of the City of Swansea in 1985.
